Welcome to the Woodbury Food Co-Op Project

This is a local grassroots effort from the community exploring the potential of creating a successful food co-op.

What Is a Food Co-Op?

Food co-ops are a valuable alternative to industrialized food systems. Unlike most grocery stories, a food co-op is voluntarily owned, democratically governed and community driven. Each member owns a portion of the co-op and may vote on co-op policies and practices. Rooted in principles of autonomy, democracy, equality, equity, social responsibility and caring for others, co-ops help communities grow and thrive.

20%

On average, co-ops purchase 20% of their products from local sources, compared to just 6% for supermarkets.

1 in 3 Americans

One in three Americans is a member of at least one type of cooperative, with co-ops serving over 1.3 million member-owners in the retail food sector in the United States.

1.6%

For every $1,000 spent at a food co-op, approximately $1,604 in economic activity is generated in the local community, which is $239 more than the impact from a conventional grocer.

Why We Believe In This

Our small exploratory group was formed in October 2025 after connecting through our local farm CSA. With a combined history as members, shoppers, and volunteers of co-ops across the country, we quickly confirmed our shared passion for bringing the benefits of a food co-op to our community. Together we decided to embark on the journey to learn what it would take to make that happen.Below, we have shared a bit about why each of us believes in this for Woodbury. With the many benefits a co-op brings, we look forward to learning what matters most to you as together we discover the best possible vision of what could be.

Co-ops create the magic of community! I’ve enjoyed shopping at co-ops for many years.
Hi, I’m Peggy. My husband Flip and I moved to Woodbury in 2022. We have been on a journey in the last 10 years of leaving behind processed foods and consciously purchasing locally sourced, organic, and fair trade products. We have purchased food shares through community supported agriculture from various farms in the area.We are excited about the possibility of bringing a food co-op to Woodbury. I want my purchasing dollars to support the local economy, help to create a gathering space for community, and to foster sustainability in the future.Flip
Hi, I am Flip, and my wife Peggy and I have lived in Woodbury for four years. Over time we have strived to improve the quality of the food we buy, and I feel the next step is to start a food co-op here in Woodbury. We have thoroughly enjoyed moving here and want to add to the community. This is a big step, but I am committed to eating high quality locally sourced food. A co-op can not only provide the food choices but help educate me what good food choices are. Hope you will join me!
Renee
My name is Renee, and I have lived in Woodbury since 2022. I am passionate about exploring the possibility of bringing a food co-op to Woodbury for a number of reasons, first and foremost, as a very specific action I can take to move our small slice of the world toward the vision I hope for my daughter and her generation. Food has a long history of bringing people together in community, but the way we shop for food has in many cases moved us so far away from one another and from the earth. My hope is we have an option here in Woodbury that supports our local economy, brings affordable, healthy food to everyone, makes it easier to be better stewards of the earth and celebrates/honors everyone involved in making that happen. And we hope to build some lasting connections along the way!
